The Moors

Spring 2023

The Moors was a student produced Production part of The Jeremy Torres Lab Theatre. Directed by Shelby Curry and Omarion Reed.

One of my challenges as costume designer was figuring out how I to achieve a period look with a limited budget. I reached out to an Austin based designer who I had worked with before and we worked out a deal where our production would borrow costumes in exchange for help organizing her stock. I looked for costumes that fit the color pallet and aesthetics of each character. With the Approval of the Director, we chose to set the play in the 1900s to have more access to “period accurate” costumes that would inform our audience of the time. Moving the period up also allowed me to purchase items from the Goodwill Bins that fit within the period or could be altered.

Huldy’s Murder Dress was found at Goodwill and I altered it to appear more Victorian. My Goal was for this dress to look like a Victorian gown Huldy pulled out of a trunk.
